I’m going to be honest with you Michael, I had such a fever and despite the fact I zoomed into class my retention of anything said was limited at best. I am only happy that despite the fact I was sick, the outdoor education technology integration guest speaker/class was postponed. Anyway,
LEARNING DESIGN VS. UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING
Buckle your bootstraps because they are different! Honestly! Who knew!
I went into the revision of these notes without a doubt that we were just learning different terminology for the same ideas, but I was wrong! Let me break it down for you.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
Broad framework put in place in a classroom or educational setting that is intended to emphasize accessibility and inclusivity in our learning communities. This teaching approach promotes the use of flexible instructional methods, materials, and assessments to support the full spectrum of learners and to remove barriers to learning and focuses on accommodating diverse needs and abilities.
Learning Design
Very intentional! The creation of engaging learning opportunities, activities and materials that support specific learning goals. Learning design encompasses various instructional theories, pedagogical approaches, and curriculum development frameworks and can be created to meet the needs of particular and specific groups of students and their learning goals.
While both are intended to create more equitable and inclusive classrooms – they are indeed different!
